==Notes about categories==
If you create an article that corresponds to one on the English Wikipedia, translate the English categories into Manx and add them to the article. Although there are not many articles here at the moment, more are always being added. It will be easier to choose categories for articles if the categories already exist. For example, if you write an article on ''John Doe (politickeyr Manninagh)'', put the article in the cateogiries<nowiki>[[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx]] (births in the year xxxx), [[Ronney:Baaseyn 'sy vlein xxxx]] (deaths in the year xxxx), [[Ronney:Olteynyn y Chiare as Feed]] (members of the House of Keys), [[Ronney:Sleih ass Doolish]] (people from Douglas)</nowiki> and so on. There are many kinds of politician in the Isle of Man, and therefore it's best to put the articles in the right categories, and it's easier to find the articles. See the following category tree:
<nowiki>
[[Ronney:Sleih]]</nowiki><br />
:→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Sleih rere keird]]</nowiki><br />
::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Politickeyryn]]</nowiki><br />
:::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Politickeyryn rere çheer]]</nowiki><br />
::::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Politickeyryn Manninagh]]</nowiki><br />
:::::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Kiannoortyn Vannin]]</nowiki><br />
:::::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Olteynyn y Chiare as Feed]]</nowiki><br />
:::::→ <nowiki>[[Ronney:Olteynyn y Choonseil Slattyssagh]]</nowiki><br />
::::::→ <nowiki>[[Juan Turner]]</nowiki>
If the article is not available on the English Wikipedia, look at similar articles and put the article in similar categories.

If you want to the article to display alphabetically in the category, there are two options:
To display "John Doe" by surname, you can use the form:
# <nowiki>{{DEFAULTSORT:Doe, John}}</nowiki><br/><nowiki>[[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx]]</nowiki>, and put the categories under this DEFAULTSORT.
or add an extra bit to the category itself:
# <nowiki>[[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx|Doe, John]]</nowiki>

Note that '''ç''' is not a separate letter in Manx, but a form of the letter '''c'''. On Wikipedia, '''ç''' doesn't appear next to '''c''' in alphabetical lists. This means articles beginning with '''c''' will appear at the end of the alphabet. If the name of the article begins with '''ç''', do the following:
:For the article ''Çhengey''<br />
:Add the article to categories like this:<br />
<nowiki>[[Ronney:xxxx|Chengey]]</nowiki> or <nowiki>{{DEFAULTSORT:Chengey}} [[Ronney:xxxx]]</nowiki>

General notes

Variation in Manx

In some cases there are several alternative Manx names, or variant spellings. If you’re sure they really are interchangeable, it doesn’t matter which you use. However, try to be consistent within each article.

Terminology

If you need a technical term, please use the following procedure:

  1. Check the Tshwane dictionary. The dictionary reader is available at the TshwaneReader website, and the latest edition of the Manx dictionary is available on the Manx.net website. This dictionary contains the latest Coonceil ny Gaelgey official Manx vocabulary. Another useful resource is the Online Manx Dictionary for contextual examples. Note that the OMD doesn’t accept ç/Ç in searches – use c/C instead.
  2. Check the Termeeaght page.
  3. Decide on a new term by doing the following:
    1. Check other Gaelic dictionaries (especially technical ones) to see what they've done
    2. Look at related words in Manx. For example, if translating photosynthesis, look at photo- words and synth- words. Remember to look at both the English and Manx to make sure it really means what you think it does!
    3. If combining words, decide which order they go in based on similar words. For example, even though adjectives come last in Manx, neuro- words are usually translated neayr-X not X neayrag.
    4. Be careful with adjectives, especially nouns used as adjectives. skynn pabyragh is not the same as skynn pabyr or skynn ny pabyryn. Some nouns take a genitive form: eeast marrey for marine fish, but grunt ny marrey for the bottom of the sea, caair lhuingey not caair lhong for deck chair.
    5. Watch out for irregular plurals!
    6. Decide whether it’s best to create a new word or borrow from the original language. For culture-specific terms it may be best to keep the original.
  4. Go to the Termeeaght discussion page and add your new terms in the most logical place. Please wait for discussion before adding them to the main Termeeaght page - this is intended for terms that have been agreed on after discussion. As you can see, we often end up changing the terms we first intended to use.

If you discover a problem with a term being used on Wikipedia (for example, the wrong plural being used, or a term that has now been superseded by one from Coonceil ny Gaelgey) please explain this on the Termeeaght page before changing other people's work. There may be a good reason why a different term is being used (for example, to make technical distinctions in a specialist field).

Spelling of foreign terms

Manx does not use the letters X or Z. These are usually changed when adopting foreign words, but not in names of people. Names of places are trickier: we often don't change them at all, but in some cases (such as countries) we attempt a Manx version until an official CnG term is available.

Where X or Z is pronounced /z/ as in zebra, it is usually replaced with S: metazoa > metasoa. Where X is pronounced as /ks/ as in Texas, it is usually replaced with CS: excavata > ecscavata.

Spelling of foreign names

  1. For names in the Roman alphabet, the native spelling of the term is used (e.g. Juan Carlos). Where confusion seems likely, it is helpful to include a phonetic transcription in IPA. For example, Juan may be a Manx or Spanish name and has different pronunciations / ʤuən/ vs /xwan/.
  2. For names in other writing systems, the standard English spelling of the term is used. Ç is not added to these terms. 陳寶箴 (Chén Bǎozhēn}} is written as Chen Baozhen, not Çhen Baozhen.

Notes about articles

People

People’s names

The main article should be kept under the official name of the person. Pen-names and other pseudonyms should redirect to this page. Within the text, use whatever term is most appropriate for the context.

Some foreign names may have more than one official alternative. For example, Chinese names written in Hanzi can have several pronunciations, depending which form of Chinese is used - for example, using one form in Cantonese and another in Mandarin. An example would be the singer Jolin Tsai / Cai Yilin. It's best to use the version approved by the person; if they have no preference, use the most common; if there is still no clear winner then use the same version as the English Wikipedia.

If someone has changed their name, and is significantly better-known by one name, the main article should be under this name. Alternative names should redirect to this page. Within the text, use whatever term is most appropriate for the context.

Titles

Titles should not be included in the names of pages.

Spelling

See #Spelling of foreign terms

Order of names

Names should be given in the order preferred by the person.

Choice of pronoun

In some circumstances there may be a choice between male and female pronouns to refer to a person.

  1. A person's own preference usually has priority.
  2. It may be appropriate to use different pronouns in different parts of an article (for example, before and after a sex change) where this does not conflict with 1.

Places

The order of preference for names of places is:

  1. The official Manx name (Paarys, not Paris) or spelling.
  2. The name of the place in the native language of that region. Caerdydd, not Cardiff.
  3. Where there are two or more languages, but one is specific to that region, use the regional language, even if the native language is not spoken widely in the place itself. For example, the city in Brittany is known as Naoned in Manx (Breton), not Nantes (French), even though Breton is not a majority language there and may rarely have been spoken in the area.
  4. Where there are several languages native to the region, but one has a significantly stronger link to the place, that language has priority.
  5. Where there is no clear linguistic priority, the name that is alphabetically first has priority.

Infoboxes should include, in the following order:

  1. The official Manx name, if any.
  2. The official name of the place in the native languages of the region, in alphabetical order.

Alternate spellings, nicknames etc. may be better placed in the article itself, to avoid confusion by listing too many names.

Science

Names of biological groups

In general, use the scientific plural for the names of pages describing biological groups such as kingdoms, phyla etc. This is usually more specific and accurate than using common names which have alternative meanings (for example, common use of baagh does not include most members of the kingdom animalia.

Notes about categories

If you create an article that corresponds to one on the English Wikipedia, translate the English categories into Manx and add them to the article. Although there are not many articles here at the moment, more are always being added. It will be easier to choose categories for articles if the categories already exist. For example, if you write an article on John Doe (politickeyr Manninagh), put the article in the cateogiries[[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx]] (births in the year xxxx), [[Ronney:Baaseyn 'sy vlein xxxx]] (deaths in the year xxxx), [[Ronney:Olteynyn y Chiare as Feed]] (members of the House of Keys), [[Ronney:Sleih ass Doolish]] (people from Douglas) and so on. There are many kinds of politician in the Isle of Man, and therefore it's best to put the articles in the right categories, and it's easier to find the articles. See the following category tree: [[Ronney:Sleih]]

→ [[Ronney:Kiannoortyn Vannin]]
→ [[Ronney:Olteynyn y Chiare as Feed]]
→ [[Ronney:Olteynyn y Choonseil Slattyssagh]]
→ [[Juan Turner]]

If the article is not available on the English Wikipedia, look at similar articles and put the article in similar categories.

If you want to the article to display alphabetically in the category, there are two options: To display "John Doe" by surname, you can use the form:

  1. {{DEFAULTSORT:Doe, John}}
    [[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx]], and put the categories under this DEFAULTSORT.

or add an extra bit to the category itself:

  1. [[Ronney:Ruggyryn 'sy vlein xxxx|Doe, John]]

Note that ç is not a separate letter in Manx, but a form of the letter c. On Wikipedia, ç doesn't appear next to c in alphabetical lists. This means articles beginning with c will appear at the end of the alphabet. If the name of the article begins with ç, do the following:

For the article Çhengey
Add the article to categories like this:

[[Ronney:xxxx|Chengey]] or {{DEFAULTSORT:Chengey}} [[Ronney:xxxx]]

Notes about templates

Navboxes

For maintenance, it is often easier to use a navbox template (Clowan:Kishtey stiurey or Clowan:Kishtey stiureydys keintagh) as the basis for a new navbox, rather than building one as a table. However, this may not be possible, depending on the content you need in the new navbox.

List in navboxes

When using lists in navboxes, items are often separated with the symbol "·". To avoid line breaks before the symbol (which results in the · symbol at the start of a line), you can use the template Clowan:· - this automatically inserts a non-breaking space before the symbol. In this case, avoid putting a space before the symbol itself:

Doolish{{·}}Laksaa{{·}} Purt ny hInshey

Y Doolish · Laksaa · Purt ny hInshey

instead of

Doolish {{·}} Laksaa{{·}} Purt ny hInshey

Doolish  · Laksaa · Purt ny hInshey

as this results in two consecutive spaces - which looks messy, and also allows a line break before the symbol, which was what we were trying to avoid.

Notes about user pages

The format of your user pages is largely a matter of personal preference.

Your own user page

Your main user page (of the form Ymmydeyr:Person) is for information related to Wikipedia in some way. It is not a blog or home page: it is about you as a Wikipedia user. However, it can contain personal information.

It is useful for giving information to others about your activities on Wikipedia, your interests and areas of expertise, and your mastery of various languages. This information can be used by people wanting help to correct, improve or translate articles. You can also use it for lists of planned projects, notes relating to articles or plans, translation notes, links to your favourite articles or useful sites, and other things for your own use. You can include information on your views regarding Wikipedia and its policies. You could add notes to tell other users that you are unable to edit for a while, or other useful information. If you work on several different Wikipedias, it is very useful to add a link to your pages on the other Wikipedias, or to the talk page you check most often, in case people want to contact you.

Some users like to display relevant information by using templates, such as the Babel template, which was designed for listing your known languages. These are known as userboxes or kishtaghyn ymmydeyr. The Manx templates (Clowan:User gv-0 and versions up to gv-5) are particularly useful.

You can create subpages of your user page in the same way as any other pages. These are also considered part of your user page. You might use these for testing new pages or templates, or collecting large amounts of information (for example, a complete list of your interests and expertise).

Content

Your user pages are part of Wikipedia, and should not contain anything offensive or commercial. You can include a link to your personal website, if you wish, but should not put advertising in your user pages. You should be careful about including personal information on Wikipedia, as it might be misused by others.

Do not include

Things you should not do with your user pages include (from the English Wikipedia:

  • A weblog recording your non-Wikipedia activities
  • Extensive discussion not related to Wikipedia
  • Excessive personal information (more than a couple of pages) unrelated to Wikipedia
  • Extensive personal opinions on matters unrelated to Wikipedia, wiki philosophy, collaboration, free content, the Creative Commons, etc.
  • Personal information of other persons without their consent
  • Advertising or promotion of a business or organization unrelated to Wikipedia (such as purely commercial sites or referral links)
  • Extensive self-promotional material that is unrelated to your activities as a Wikipedian
  • Other non-encyclopedic related material
  • Polemical statements unrelated to Wikipedia; in particular, statements attacking or vilifying groups of editors or persons are generally considered divisive and removed, and reintroducing them is often considered disruptive.
  • Material that can be viewed as attacking other editors, including the recording of perceived flaws. The compilation of factual evidence (diffs) in user subpages, for purposes such as preparing for a dispute resolution process, is permitted provided the dispute resolution process is started in a timely manner. Users should not maintain in public view negative information on others without very good reason.
  • Games, roleplaying sessions, and other things pertaining to "entertainment" rather than "writing an encyclopedia", particularly if they involve people who are not active participants in the project. (cite as WP:UP#Games) (compare Category:Wikipedia games and Category:Wikipedia Word Association.)
  • Communications with people uninvolved with the project or related work
  • Images which you are not free to use (usually fair use images; see below)
  • Categories and templates intended for other usage, in particular those for articles and guidelines
  • User talk pages should not redirect unless the user is indefinitely blocked.

In general, anything you would not want others to edit may be unsuitable for Wikipedia.

Other users' user pages

Users may be offended if you edit their user page without permission. As with other controversial or sensitive edits, it is better to discuss on the relevant talk page: in this case, the user's own talk page. It is not acceptable to vandalise user pages, any more than articles. If you need to make a change to someone else's page without time for discussion (for example, to remove offensive material or vandalism, or to fix a problem affecting the website) then always leave a comment explaining your actions. This should not be done for trivial reasons.

Talk pages

Talk pages are a good way to contact other users and discuss their activities, possible shared projects, and similar topics. Talk pages may also be used to advise or warn other users of problems, for example, if they are breaking Wikipedia rules, making repeated simple errors, or have not noticed a change in policy.
