? Everyone knows the real Manx for Dublin is Divlyn. A perfectly good Gaelic name - Dubh Linn. So why are we respelling the Irish here?

It might be useful to have something like "Divlyn (Baile Atha Cliath (Balley Aah Cleeah), Bearla -Dublin)" on it. Strange that both Dublin/Divlyn and Baile Atha Cliath/Balley Aah Cleeah are both Gaelic.

To tell the truth, the correct Irish form is Duibhlinn. Dubh Linn is merely a back translation from the English translation Black Pool. Duibhlinn in Modern Irish has various pronunciations, depending in dialect, such as Dhíliñ or Dhíling, the two most common Southern forms (Dhíliñ was the local Dublin dialect), while in more high-class Irish, the pronunciation is something like Dhivliñ (and in Old/Classical Irish Duvliñ. Manx has merely kept the correct Irish pronunciation, though because it is written using that (corrupt - dare I be so crass?) Anglo-Welsh spelling, the actual relationship is hidden.
